Calculation of domestic hot water tank

Calculation of domestic hot water tank

Calculation of capacity and thermal power required in a tank for the production of domestic hot water. The calculation is carried out based on the destination of the environments and their type of use.

Welcome to the "Domestic Hot Water Tank Calculation" program created and offered by Itieffe. In a world where efficiency and comfort are central to building structures, the design of domestic hot water supply systems plays a crucial role in ensuring a reliable and optimized supply of domestic and commercial hot water .

This program was created with the aim of offering an advanced and intuitive tool for calculating and designing tanks used in domestic hot water systems. Aimed at plumbing engineers, heating engineers, and those involved in water system design, the program offers a reliable solution for sizing tanks that meet water heating needs efficiently.

Through a very intuitive interface, you can enter the specific parameters of your project and instantly obtain accurate calculations relating to the capacity of the tank and the thermal power necessary for its operation and thermal losses.

This tool will guide you in analyzing the performance of the system, choosing the size of the tank and designing solutions that ensure a constant supply of hot water with maximum efficiency.

We are excited to present you the "DHW Tank Calculation" program, convinced that it will be an essential companion for all those working in the plumbing and heating engineering sector. The precision of the calculations and the ease of use of the tool will allow you to optimize water heating systems, while ensuring maximum energy savings and user comfort.

We thank those who have contributed to this program and are confident that it will become an essential tool in the design and implementation of domestic hot water supply systems. Good job on the calculation and design of hot water tanks.

How to calculate the capacity and heat output of the domestic hot water tank

Very often it happens to have to establish the size of a tank for the storage of domestic hot water.

The storage tanks for domestic hot water (UNI 9182 / UNI TS 11300) are used for domestic purposes.

Domestic hot water can generally be produced with:

  • boiler
  • heat pump
  • electrical resistance (more expensive system).

The sizing of these storage tanks should be carried out by qualified professionals.

However, below we give general indications for their sizing.

A more detailed report is given by the attached program.

The rapid sizing in liters of a storage tank for domestic hot water can be deduced from tables (normally provided by the manufacturers) which take into account the consumption of hot water in the peak period, the duration of the latter, the temperature of the cold water and that of use, the preheating time and, as regards the primary circuit (not sanitary), the inlet and outlet temperature of the heating fluid.

Generally, a storage tank of 80 ÷ 100 liters is more than enough for a medium-sized apartment.

 consumption

The general consumption in liters of water by users is described below:

  • bathtub - 100 ÷ 120
  • shower - 50 ÷ 60
  • washbasin - 10 ÷ 12
  • bidet - 8 ÷ 10
  • kitchen sink - 15 ÷ 20.

For homes with several bathrooms, it is necessary to provide larger tanks.

The accumulation of hot water normally falls between 35 and 50 liters for each member of the household (excluding the electric water heater which has lower values).

When determining the amount of hot water required, the following should be considered:

  • about 100 liters of hot water at 40 ° C are used for a bath in the tub
  • with the shower approximately 35 liters of hot water at 40 ° C are used
  • with a kitchen sink about 0,2 liters of hot water per second at 55 ° C (720 l / h) are used
  • with a sink you use 0,15 liters of hot water per second at 40 ° C (540 l / h)
  • about 3 liters of hot water per day are required for personal cleaning
  • about 2 liters of hot water per person per day are required for cooking
  • about 20 liters of hot water per wash are required for the dishwasher (if hot water is used for the water supply)
  • The washing machine needs approximately 30 liters of hot water (if hot water is used for the water supply).

Below are the values of an average consumption of domestic hot water per person and per day:

  • low consumption = 20 ÷ 30 liters;
  • average consumption = 30 ÷ 50 liters;
  • high consumption = 50 ÷ 70 liters.

Here's an example:

hot water temperature 45 ° C

family 6 people - average consumption of 40 liters of water per day per person (including use of washing machine and dishwasher) - 240 liters

The storage tank must be at least 250 liters.

A free program is published below which performs all the calculations necessary to size the domestic hot water storage tank, based on individual needs.

It needs no instructions as it is very intuitive and easy to use.

Just enter the required data.

good job
