Ratio of flow rate section to air speed in ducts

Ratio of flow rate section to air speed in ducts

Program that calculates the relationship between flow rate, section and air speed in the ducts

This program was created by Itieffe to provide an in-depth understanding of the relationship between flow rate, section and air velocity, explaining how these parameters are interconnected and how they influence the behavior of air flow within HVAC systems.

Understanding the relationship between flow rate, cross section and air velocity is essential for HVAC engineers, building designers, installers and all those involved in managing and optimizing air distribution systems. This knowledge helps ensure uniform air distribution, thermal comfort of occupants and greater energy efficiency, while minimizing pressure losses and operating costs.

With this program, we will walk you through the concept of flow-section-air velocity relationships and provide you with practical tools for calculating and applying these relationships in HVAC projects. We will explore how to properly size ductwork and air distribution elements based on specific application needs, ensuring a comfortable and healthy indoor environment.

We are happy to accompany you on this learning journey, which will help improve air quality and comfort in our living and working spaces. Understanding the relationship between flow rate, section and air velocity is a fundamental step towards an advanced and responsible HVAC industry, contributing to the well-being of people and the sustainability of built environments.

Air speed section flow rate ratio

Easy program to calculate the relationship between flow rate, section and air speed in ducts

Instructions

The program is divided into two sections

let's take the previous drawing as a reference:

1) the first finds the optimal dimensions of the ducting starting from the flow rate in cubic meters per hour (m³ / h) and from the air speed (expressed in meters per second or meters per minute).

Let's take an example with the set values:

air flow = 5.000 m³ / h

air speed = 4 meters per second (m / s)

the automatically calculated front surface of the duct is 0.347 square meters (m²);

we enter the dimension of one side, in this case 700 mm;

the other side calculated automatically will be 500 mm.

2) Let's analyze the second part of the program which, through the dimensions of the ducting and the speed of the air you can find the flow rate of the same.

Let's take an example with the set values:

we insert the values of the side n. 1 and side n. 2, in our case: 800 mm and 700 mm.

The calculated front area of the duct is 0.560 square meters (m²).

By inserting the air speed, in this case 5 meters per second (m / s), the air flow rate is obtained which will be equal to 10.080 m³ / h.
