How to measure with a micrometer

The micrometer is a high precision gauge with sensitivity to the hundredth of a millimeter. 

The most common make measurements in mm between:

0-25 / 25-50 / 50-75 / 75-100 

1- fixed anvil6 - graduated compass
2 - measuring faces7 - internal micrometric screw
3 - mobile rod8 - stand (thermally insulated handle)
4 - locking device9 - torque limiter ratchet
5 - line of faith10 - graduated drum (vernier)

How to proceed

  • insert the piece to be measured between the measuring faces (1 - 3)
  • act on the ratchet (torque limiter or clutch) to match the measuring faces with the piece (9)
  • act on the locking device to freeze the measurement (4)
  • take the reading between the faith line (5) and the graduated drum (vernier) (10)

Let's see an example

The last notch that can be read on the faith line of the fixed scale (5) corresponds to the value 12.50 mm, while on the graduated or vernier drum (10) you can read 0.31 mm - So the measurement is equal to 12.81 mm.
